I have taken the liberty of writing some new words to this well-known hymn, "The Old Rugged Cross"...to suit the "Times" and this Picture. I hope no one will be offended.

Dedicated: To ALL the Firemen, Policemen and RescueWorkers  who Perished on September 11, 2001

Verse 1.

Refrain

At Ground Zero...... in NYC
Stands a great steel beam cross
Erected by men
Who have suffered great loss.

Their comrades died there
In a most Tragic way
Trying to save others
That violent, sad day.

So they cherish that great steel beam cross
As a place where their footsteps can go
To pray and rest their sad heart
At the foot of that unusual steel cross.

Verse 2.

Refrain

Ladder Company Five
With many others quickly arrived
Rushing to the scene
Hearing the call.

Into Hell they then plunged
Suddenly people all screamed
As the great tower....
Started to fall!

So they cherish that great steel beam cross
In rememberance of those who died there
Their efforts were not in vain
They are Heros....beyond compare
Yes, they cherish that unusual cross.

Verse 3.

These are the actual beams pulled out of the rubble and erected..."As Is". Mayor Rudy Giuliani has declared this is not a Christian site but one of Tribute, Renewal and Hope for ALL faiths. The workers of all faiths, who are now struggling...go there for a break, to pray and to try to gather strength to continue this massive and most terrible task.

Brave men from all around
Now stared at the ground
Where once a tower so high
Reached right up to the sky.

Then they started to shout
Lets get these men out
Someone had to survive
They must be alive!

So they cherish that great steel beam cross
As a place where their footsteps can go
To pray and rest their sad heart
At the foot of that unusual steel cross.

Verse 4.

Refrain

They searched...then for days
As if in a haze
But try as they might
No more could be saved.

Finally they knew
From that tragic Death Zone
That the Angels
Had carried them....HOME.

So they cherish that great steel beam cross
In rememberance of those who had died there
Their efforts were not in vain
They are Heros....beyond compare
Yes they are Heros....Beyond Compare.
